Documenting Hatem Kalaoun's story as an immigrant to America, a successful small business owner, and a father, has been a passion project for his son, Abraham, ever since college. For the past three years, we've discussed and imagined how we'd film his dad--we just needed the right opportunity! Finally, when we returned to Rhode Island in July 2018 after living in Georgia for a year and a half, we were able to film at the garage, and also interview Hatem to hear from him firsthand. Matt Smith has been shooting Polaroid and instant photographs for over a decade, capturing surfing and beach life that surrounds and inspires him. He breathes new life into a near-extinct photography medium, specialising in expired film and using an impressive armoury of vintage cameras he has collected over the years. HOLLOKO is a Paloc ethnographic village in Hungary/Europe, part of the WORLD HERITAGE. It's name means 'RAVEN STONE' in Hungarian. The village considered the MOST photographed village in Hungary, located approximately 57 miles from Budapest, the capital of Hungary. This remarkable place has traditionally been in habited by PALOC people. PALOC speak an old dialect of Hungarian and have preserved their characteristic architecture and their fold costumes. Recognition of the cultural significance of the settlement was given in 1987 when Holloko was the first village in the WORLD to be added to UNESCO's world Heritage List. The village, which lies in a small valley, has burned down several times ( the last time was back in 1909 ) but each time the inhabitants rebuilt their houses in almost the same shape and forms. An Artist's Story is a film about Emma Tweedie and her creative struggle to overcome fear and lack of time in order to pursue a lifelong dream of being a painter and conceptual artist.

"When the Land Calls" was inspired by the work of photographer James Ravillious, who in the 1970s and 80s documented the fast disappearing rural life of North Devon. One of his subjects was farmer Bill Strawbridge. Today Bill's grandson Ed farms the same land. The film follows Ed through his day on the dairy farm and as he looks back at Ravillious's photographs of the farming life in the years before he was born. Earlier this year "When the Land Calls" won the Arri/Director's UK Challenge - to film, edit and deliver a three minute film on the subject of Millenials in just three days using an Arri Amira.

Elna Nilsson is a PhD in chemistry and works with combustion physics at Lund (Sweden) University of Technology. But she also has a Scandinavian, European and World Championship title in Thaiboxing. She lives to be in the ring and does not hesitate for a second to work hard on early mornings, late evenings and weekends. This is her story.

Filmed primarily in Lebanon, this short documentary explores how Syrian Refugees, and other disadvantaged people, are using a cloud-based tool to securely store documents to share with universities and scholarship agencies. Since taking a year off from University and working in commercial photography, I developed my own unique outlook on life. This has come from my belief that people become too content with their place in life. They create a ‘finish line’ in their head and once they are there they settle for what they have. People become content with living their life going from point A to point B. We instead should always be on a path of self improvement no matter where we are. This can be translated into future career prospects, fitness, skills, everything that you have a set goal for already. In the summer a group of young people embarked to discover, explore and conserve the Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve. They Shared the experience through photography, filmmaking animation and wild writing. They all worked towards gaining a John Muir Award, the award scheme for people of all backgrounds – groups, families, individuals. It’s non-competitive, inclusive and accessible. This is the story of Darwin Brewing Company, a tiny, family owned brewery in Sarasota, Florida that is trying to leave their mark in the booming craft beer scene in Tampa, Florida and change the community for the better that supports them and their beer.

In 1916, a black farmer named Anthony Crawford was brutally lynched in Abbeville, South Carolina. One hundred years later, the Crawford family returns to the town square to acknowledge the racial violence that once drove them away.

Rejected from their families, housing, jobs; many transgender people have to figure out other means of survival. This community is intensely profiled by the police and when incarcerated rates of sexual assault and abuse at the hands of both inmates and guards are 10 times higher for the transgender community as compared to the general population. Most transgender people are forced to serve time in facilities that don’t align with their gender identity. Ms. Diamond’s story unfortunately is only one of many.

An international popband sensation of centenarian grannies? Yep, it’s KBG84. People in the Okinawa island chain in southern Japan live to be the oldest anywhere in the world. It is designated a BlueZone and has one of the highest concentrations of centenarians. While both men and women of older generations live long lives, women tend to outlive their male counterparts and make it well into their 100s – and Tomi-San is no exception. Unavoidable when you live that long, tragedy entered Tomi’s life when both her son & husband passed away. Tomi found herself in a deep depression. This is the story of how she faced unimaginable hardship and sorrow in her life and in the process broke through barriers beyond her wildest dreams. Film Convert played a role in the final grade as we looked to really bring out the granny's age, frailty, yet paradoxical ruggedness.

Popolo Shoreditch (popoloshoreditch.com/home/) recently celebrated its first birthday and to mark the occasion we made a little film showing a day in the life of this wonderful Italian restaurant. The film was shot over one whole day (16 hours to be precise) and captures the huge amount of work that goes into preparing the food before they even open for business and also the buzzing lunch and evening service at the Michelin Bib Gourmand award winner. The film was shot on a Leica M-P240 with Zeiss Planar 50/2, Leitz 90/2.8 and Voightlander 35/1.4 lenses. Some shots taken with the Leica D-Lux 109. Episode 5 of Rough Hands took me on a roadtrip from Brisbane to the ACT, to meet Karim Haddad. A CEO turned bladesmith, who now runs a nationally acclaimed knifemaking business and training academy. Karim invited me to stay on his property where I camped in my van and took in the amazing landscape and sense of peace that Tharwa Valley offers. One of the reasons I love creating this series is that I get the chance to travel around the country, spend time with, and pick up wisdom from other creators.
