This Film Used to Be About Rum

In Cold War-times, Cuba racked up a debt with what was then called Czecholslavakia. Since then, the Soviet Union collapsed, Czechoslovakia became the Czech Republic, and Cuba stood frozen in time. That Soviet-era debt survives though, and negotiations have recently surfaced for Cuba to repay that debt in rum. According to The Guardian, 130 years worth. Of rum. That’s a fun story, right? We thought so too. So we went to Cuba to tell it, and learned that you can’t just make a puff piece in an active military dictatorship.

Martin Kohlstedt - Strom (Chapter II)

How do you approach what we call music – for its creators, for its listeners, for its tangent society? Martin Kohlstedt, a composer and pianist in the maelstrom of contemporary experimental classical music searches and provides his own answers in form of improvisations, modular compositions and foremost in the embrace of intuitive emotion. Nothing must be forbidden in music if it was, in its core, born from irrevocable encounters – that is his credo. The multi-part documentary dubbed »Strom« accompanies Martin Kohlstedt on his journeys. They lead him from his rustic thuringian home to the seemingly abstract musical cultures of Iran, the United States and Russia to circle around and ultimately arrive back at himself .»Strom« – the german term for »stream« as well as »electricity« – is also the title of Martin Kohlstedts current album, is a reference to the amalgamation of instrumental corpora with an electrified world. Waste Knot Wood

One day we struck the realisation that we know a bunch of people who have taken a big leap of faith and are pursuing some really cool dreams. So we decided that we would make a mini series of films that showcase their talents - The People Project. Meet Tom, the woodworker. We shot this film across a number of afternoons at the WKW workshop in Chichester, West Sussex. Tom’s work is awesome and we quickly realised that he’d be a good person to feature for Episode 02.
