Memories of a beach (Filmconvert + Osiris LUT)

Some moments from barefoot beach while I was out taking photos with my siblings. I didn't have an ND filter with me so the frame rate is crazy high to counter over exposure, and most of the shots were brief with no plans in mind for them. Instead of tossing this footage I decided to use it to experiment with color grading and decided to combine Filmconvert with an Osiris LUT.

Camera: Panasonic GH3
Lens: Pana 12-25mm 2.8
Edit/Cut: Premiere Pro (CS6)
Color/Grade: After Effects (CS6)
Filmconvert: Plrd 600 (16mm super)
Osiris: Vision X (rec.709)

Infinity Monday Morning

We were scouting locations in Southern California and we found this gem of a spot and decided to fire up the gear and make a SUP piece. We wanted to create a piece about a morning sup surf session with a cinematic feel. Shot on the BMCC (Blackmagic Cinema Camera) with Nikon zooms and primes, graded it in Film Convert and finished it off in Premiere. Thanks to our good friend (and frequent go to talent for SUP projects) Brody from PaddleFit and Dave from Infinity Surfboards for always supporting with killer gear.

Surf Session: Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz was our last stop before heading back to San Diego after spending 4 days on the road bouncing around California. We got there a little later than we planned, but after spending a few minutes watching the guys (and girls) charge waves, we decided to grab some gear out of the van and see what we could get. We found a nice spot on the cliff and spent the next 30 minutes chasing surfers with our lens. Santa Cruz is one of our favorite Northern California towns, so it was cool to take a break and just film something for the fun of it.

Camera: 2.5k Blackmagic Cinema Camera (a mix of raw and ProRes)
Lenses: Nikon 28-70 2.8 and Nikon 70-200 2.8.
Edit: Premiere and After Effects
Grade: Resolve (Exposure) and Film Convert (BW/Grain)

The Timberman

On the edge of Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park lives Walter Keller, a Swiss national who came to Canada in 1967 with the dream of becoming a cowboy. He never became a cowboy, but instead picked up a chainsaw and began a long career in forestry, before finding a hidden talent in wood carving. Walter and his sweetheart, now design and carve commissioned artwork for clients across Canada, the northern USA, and Europe.

I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon in October with Walter as he worked on a number of pieces, and got an insight into his creative process.

Some of Walter's work can be viewed on his website: www.thetimberman.net-profiles.com

Born to Move

Born To Move is a documentary featuring Brandon M. Girouard; professional dancer / choreographer. This short film serves as a window into the talented man that is sweeping the dance industry by storm. From broadway to the las vegas strip, now Brandon is starting to bridge the gap between domestic and international star. Shot in an entire day utilizing the Nikon D3200 Capion serves up a rich taste of edgy modern dance and the struggles of making it in todays dog eat dog world. Please remember to LIKE and SHARE! My Mother's Prairie

I spent a hot, bug-filled, summer afternoon filming at my home in Wisconsin. Why? Because my (wonderful) mother is an ecologist and has a beautiful prairie. Some of this footage will be used for a film I am (hopefully) putting together for my mom's business. During the time of filming gnats were out in full force. They kept flying around and landing on my lenses, buzzing next to the microphone (which you can hear), and generally annoying the f*** out of me.

This was shot on a Canon 600d using neutral picture profile. Canon Lenses: 50mm f/1.8, 16-35mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8. Aerial video shot using GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition recording in ProTune at 60fps (Narrow FOV)

Graded with FilmConvert and Magic Bullet Looks.

New York City | "Color Commentary" on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

Within the week of posting, my NYC test run of the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera went north of 3k playbacks, seeming sensible now to complement with a split-screen comparison of the untouched footage straight from the camera, alongside that finished product after color correction/grading. I have no delusions of being a studio auteur, who could justify a braggart director's commentary, but after thinking about the option to write a long, wordy blog post, I figured it's easier and better all-around just to talk over my footage. It's a visual medium anyway, and I'm sort of surprised there aren't more of these. Would love to see yours, too.

The video streams by default in full 1080p high definition, so if you get jitters, click the HD icon in-frame to reduce your playback resolution. For reference, here's the original seven-minute film: http://vimeo.com/hpmoon/nyc. As I say at the end of this commentary, please add your comments below, and please share your work

New York City | Breaking in the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

[UPDATE: Also check out the split-screen "color commentary" on this at http://vimeo.com/hpmoon/bmpc.]

On August 29, there were just a handful of Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras (BMPCs) in circulation, but I managed to get one. That weekend, I took a visit to New York City as my occasion to break it in. Manhattan has been a limitless source of inspiration for people far more talented than me, but the Blackmagic technology, coming to market in such a versatile size, invited this cinematic tone poem which might, even so, look different. Instead of creating something like a tourism video, I wanted to try and capture the human energy of the city that New Yorkers themselves know best, driven by the extraordinary music of Richard Danielpour that I came across recently (ringing in my head all weekend as I captured these shots).

True to the elegant simplicity of the BMPC (http://bhpho.to/bmccpckt), I shot the entire piece handheld, using a single lens (Panasoni
