John Hartman - People and Place

"From his earliest years as an artist, Hartman has been drawn to the (extremely complicated, extremely difficult) discipline of portraiture, and it is this fascination that has brought him, almost inevitably, to the subject of writers. Hartman is a reader, for one thing. But, for another, writers are cut from the same cloth as Hartman in many ways. They are observant. They are more comfortable with individuals than they are with generalizations. They do not imagine that time is a simple sequence. And they see landscapes – whether the Miramachi River in New Brunswick or MacLaughlin Point in British Columbia – as places where stories are kept. The same can be said of a face. It’s a history. It’s a revelation. It’s a map." – David Macfarlane Graded with FilmConvert

Golden Hour Surf From Above

This was shot one evening during a beautiful sunset over Del Mar, San Diego, California.

My original aim was to film the sun setting over the ocean with my DJI Phantom 2 drone / quadcopter, but the surfers quickly caught my attention and added to the beauty.

This was my first time flying over the ocean and I was captivated by how the surfers, and how the waves and spray were picking up the liquid gold of the sun reflecting in the ocean.

Filmed during two flights with the Phantom 2 with Zenmuse H3-3D and GoPro 3+ black edition with the Snake river prototyping BlurFix Air ND4/CP filter, all in wide mode, on protune & flat in 2.7k.

Graded with Colorista II and Filmconvert.

PUBLIC | Art in the Wheatbelt

This year PUBLIC 2015 pressed north of the city to the open landscapes of the Wheatbelt, launching with a series of murals splashed across 36 metre grain silos and the walls of downtown Northam. London artist Phlegm, Atlanta native HENSE gathered their paint tins, aerosols, rollers and brushes and struck out for a two week residency at the heritage town on the banks of the Avon River.

Across eight huge storage towers of the state’s grain handler, CBH, Phlegm rendered his whimsical characters in their fantastic transportation devices while perched on the extended arm of a boom lift and using brushes strapped to a long pole. HENSE, adjacent, lobbed his explosive patterns across the silos in blocks of bright colour, eye catching even from the highway bisecting the wheat fields to town.

Landlocked: A One Day In Denver Short Film

This is the first of two segments that I made for the wonderful One Day In Denver filmmaking project.

The second piece will focus on the journey of the paper boats from Cherry Creek Reservoir, moving North along Cherry Creek, and into the city, culminating in their arrival at Confluence Park in Denver, where Cherry Creek meets the Platte River, and begins it's long trip east to the Mississippi, and eventually the Atlantic Ocean.

A million thanks to my awesome assistant and 2nd camera operator, Kris Farruggia for lending his time, effort, talent and commitment to helping me execute such a goofy idea.

Thank you to Matt Bliss, as well, for his profound patience and good sense of humor. Trying to get 100 stupid paper boats to cooperate wasn't easy. I'm so grateful you were willing to play along!

Thank you as well to Travis Thompson from the Denver Water Department, who's knowledge and experience will be featured in the 2nd segm
